Therapeutic Services
CRASAC offers a range of specialist support specifically developed for people who have been impacted by rape and sexual violence. We understand that the support required to address trauma is unique for each person, and no ‘one size fits all’. We are guided by your needs and preferences and will talk to you about what support options are best for you. Our approach will allow you to access the right type of support in a timely manner, at the same time offering you a person-centred holistic range of approaches and choice in your recovery journey with CRASAC.
So what will this look like?
Following your referral into therapeutic services, you will receive a telephone assessment within a few weeks with one of our qualified counsellors. You will then be invited to a ‘Welcome Session’ where we will talk to you about the types of therapeutic support on offer and provide you with some positive coping strategies and self-care advice. We will help you to understand how trauma impacts our brains and bodies, so that you can start to understand the impacts that you may have been experiencing, and they are very normal.
Welcome sessions will take place in small groups. You will not be expected to talk about what has happened to you (and we actively discourage our clients from doing this), as this needs to be explored safely in the right setting.
Your confidentiality is paramount, in all forms of support offered. All clients will be asked to sign a confidentiality contract, with the understanding that no sharing of information of any kind is shared outside of the session, this is to ensure everyone’s safety. If you have any concerns about this, you will have the opportunity to discuss them in your telephone assessment.
Following attendance at the Welcome Session, you will be invited to select the right support package for you, from a range of therapeutic interventions we offer, and begin your journey of recovery.
Counselling
Counselling for adults at CRASAC provides a safe, confidential and non-judgmental space for victims and survivors of sexual violence and abuse to explore and work through their experiences.
The service is available for all genders over the age of 13 who have been impacted by any form of rape, sexual abuse or sexual violence at any time in their lives.
During your counselling session you will never be pressured into talking about anything you don’t want to and the focus will be entirely on what you choose to bring.
Effects of abuse may not always be obvious for many years after it took place. Although counselling cannot make the abuse go away, it will enable you to work through thoughts and feelings, allowing you to acknowledge what happened, and live with it as a part of your life without being overwhelmed or controlled by the experience.
Short-term crisis counselling is available for adult women and children who have attended a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC). This is a short term therapy which doesn’t work with the deeper trauma related to experiencing sexual violence, but helps manage the impact on day to day life, providing support, sympton management and coping strategies.
Counselling is also available for supporters of victims and survivors of sexual violence and abuse. As a partner or family member of someone who is struggling with their experiences we can help you to understand its impact and your related feelings and experiences.
